Trump Fans Troll Clinton With Marijuana Memes

Hillary Clinton has pledged to do everything she can to crack down on marijuana users and block Republican-supported legalization laws if she’s elected president.

Those (false) facts are according to a series of new memes that supporters of Donald Trump have uploaded to Twitter in recent days in an apparent attempt to depress Clinton’s support among young people and progressives who support legalizing marijuana.

The fake images highlight a real problem for Clinton’s campaign: Many millennials — who overwhelming support legalizing cannabisjust aren’t that into her.

National polls in recent months have found that far more voters between the ages of 18 and 34 are in Clinton’s corner than in Trump’s, but they also show a sizable shares of youth support going to Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party and the Green Party’s Jill Stein. These third party candidates have made marijuana and drug policy reform centerpieces of their campaigns and, in swing states where the race is expected to be close, that could make all the difference in determining whether electoral votes go into Clinton’s or Trump’s column.

At a time when marijuana law reform measures on the ballots in nine states are driving prohibition opponents to the polls, Democrats may be counting on those voters to support Clinton. But the Trump backers’ new image memes seem intended to give legalization supporters pause about checking the Democratic box at the top of the ballot.

While Clinton has not personally endorsed legalization, she has embraced medical marijuana and says she supports the right of states to enact their own marijuana policies without federal interference. She has also pledged to reschedule cannabis under the Controlled Substances Act.

Trump, for his part, says he supports medical marijuana “100 percent” and has repeatedly pledged to respect state laws even though he personally opposes full legalization.

A Twitter search for the #StopThePot hashtag found on many of the images indicates that they are being shared and reposted somewhat widely in recent days.
