New Utah Poll Shows Strong Support For Legalizing Medical Marijuana

Upsetting more than a few believers within the Mormon Church, a new UtahPolicy.com poll shows two-thirds of Utah’s likely voters want medical marijuana legalized in the Beehive State.

And if Representative Gage Froerer, R-Huntsville, has anything to say about it … they will.

Defeated thanks to the heavy hand of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles during the 2016 legislative session, supporters of a Utah medical marijuana bill have found a new political powerhouse and legislative sponsor as they plant the seeds of next year’s legislation.

Anticipated to be introduced during the 2017 Legislature, a similar bill failed miserably during this year’s general session after leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints alerted its members that such legislation could ultimately cause more harm than good.

Hoping to provide real medicine for Utahns during the 2017, Rep. Froerer explained earlier this summer that he plans on sponsoring a new medical marijuana bill that’s a hybrid of 2016’s defeated cannabis proposals; mixing and matching the most compelling parts of the defeated cannabis bills that were killed off earlier this year.

Open to thoughtful suggestions, Rep. Froerer envisions legalized medical marijuana helping his constituents with a wide array of medical conditions, while simultaneously helping to marginalize the state’s number one killer – addictive opioids.

Utah Supports Legalizing Medical Marijuana

According to the Utahpolicy.com poll and Dan Jones & Associates, Utah’s newest survey found:

  • 63 percent of Utahns support legalizing medical marijuana prescribed by licensed doctors.

  • 35 percent oppose, and 2 percent don’t know.

What about recreational legalization?

  • 77 percent oppose recreational marijuana.

Providing a little food for thought for Utah’s electorate, this newest poll discovered that loyal members of the LDS church still strongly favor legalizing medical marijuana – despite the ominous warnings issued by church leaders.

Thanks to Mormon Leaks, we can now peek behind the magic curtain of the LDS church and listen to some of their views surrounding medical marijuana.
