New Research Shows Medical Marijuana Legislation Linked With Decreased Obesity

As the acceptance of medical marijuana slowly creeps across the North American landscape – allowing the sick and suffering the use of medical marijuana for their curative properties – a new study is providing further evidence of an interesting link between medical marijuana and the year-over-year reduction in obesity-related medical costs.

Per data published online, released ahead it’s lethargic cohort – The Journal Health Economics – researchers at Cornell University and San Diego State evaluated 12 years of data from the Center for Disease Control’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System; drilling down on the long ignored consequences of medical marijuana consumption on an individuals overall weight and wellness.

According to the new report, “The enforcement of MMLs is associated with a 2% to 6% decline in the probability of obesity. Our estimates suggest that MMLs induce a $58 to $115 per-person annual reduction in obesity-related medical costs.

Providing a little something positive for every patient – the study also theorized those medical marijuana patients over the age of 35 enjoyed “an increase in physical wellness and frequent exercise consistent with the hypothesis of some medicinal use of marijuana.” For those younger patients self-medicating with cannabis rather than cocktails, academics speculated that any obesity declines were the direct result of reduced alcohol consumption.

The study’s conclusions were basic and straightforward, “These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that MMLs may be more likely to induce marijuana use for health-related reasons among older individuals, and cause substitution toward lower-calorie recreational ‘highs’ among younger individuals.

These recent findings are analogous with other important observational studies, particularly one that found “tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) — a naturally occurring analogue of THC — possesses positive metabolic effects in animal models of obesity.
